Driving home this afternoon, a grey squirrel ran out into the road.
I checked there was nothing behind me and I braked so the squirrel was safe, but, I did wonder what I would have done if there had been other vehicles behind me and I think I would still have braked because I couldn't bear to kill any animal.
What if doing that caused someone to go into the back of me, who would be to blame, and what would you have done?

My husband stopped to carry a hedgehog across the road and formed a line of traffic behind the car

Yes, I did, smow. It was horrible. I'm always cautious on the dark country roads - animals pop out so suddenly - and that's just what the cat did, Straight under my wheels.
My friend hit a deer just beside where we live on a country Lane, they had to put the poor thing down, the car was badly damaged and she was traumatised for days afterwards
In answer to the OP, I would have run over it without any hesitation. Grey Squirrells are vermine and a complete nuisance. If the choice was me avoiding a collision or dangerous situation, or running over an animal, of any kind, there is no question of what I do. The animal loses out.
"My husband saw someone e deliberately drive into a mother duck and her chicks as they crossed the road."
eek you dont live near me do you naomi - i did that once (not deliberately but it could have looked like it). I just couldnt see what it was in the road, and it honestly looked like a line of rubbish or a bag flapping till i was too close to do anything
That happens frequently in the country, bobbi. I had a big stag jump over a hedge in front of me once. Fortunately I was able to stop.
Doubt it, bednobs. My husband said the man did it deliberately. He 'aimed his car', he said. Creature! How anyone could do something like that defies all understanding.
We were on a coach going up to Scotland for a climbing holiday and hit a deer. One of our group was a butcher and he dispatched the animal with his ice axe.
i once hhit a deer and it ran to the other side of the road, then came back for another hit as i was tring to stop!
I once saw a man run a chicken over on a country road. The road was deserted, no other vehicles in sight. He did it on purpose. Scumbag.
I've seen a few pigeons being run over and I was in the car when my mum ran over one too. I was mortified!

I don't like pigeons but I'd never knowingly run any animal over.
