There is nothing unusual about government breaking their promises to the electorate and it's certainly not a recent phenomenon. They can always cite an excuse for doing so, but it doesn't make it any more forgivable. Basically, we elect MPs, a government is formed from them which promptly goes on to do exactly as it wishes for five years.
I currently have nobody to vote for. In the UK there is realistically only two parties who can form a government. I usually cast my vote by voting against the party I would least like to see in power or for the one I believe would do the least damage to me, businesses and the economy. It's hardly a ringing endorsement of democracy, but it's the best we've got. But I don't expect any politicians to keep to their pledges and quite honestly what any of them tell me before an election looms has no bearing on the way I vote whatsoever.
