My "new-to-me" Ka+Zetec (3 years old) automatically cuts out at traffic lights, level crossings, etc. but has stopped doing it. Can anyone tell me if this is an expensive fault to have repaired?

you're better of without it IMV.
Are you only using it for short trips? If so, it will automatically be disabled if there is insufficient power in the battery to allow the stop start to keep operating without draining the battery.
My C Max has it too and that doesn't work often. Garage say we don't do enough miles even though battery says it's fine.
The vehicle handbook will have a long list of occasions when "stop-start" doesn't operate.
The last three cars I've owned have had the system, and I usually overide it with the appropriate button - I only want the car to cut out when I know I'm going to be stopped for some longish time ie not at roundabouts, traffic lights etc.
