Should the UK follow New Zealand's lead and work towards a full smoking ban?

I think it's a very brave move, and personally I'd be all for it.

naomi: "Conversely, TTT, I knew a lady who smoked all her life and died age 84. In her later years she became housebound and smoking was her only real pleasure. Would I have taken that away from her? No, I wouldn't. " - of course not, I know it can actually be more dangerous to stop after a lifetime of smoking. That's the beauty of the NZ system. existing smokers can...

I think it is already decreasing, isn't it? I don't think laws or heavy-handedness are the best ways to go with something that is already dropping, and won't have any real effect, other than a show of "trying something".
It's definitely decreasing. As an oldie - looking back in time most of my relations smoked and lots of kids. Not any more. I don't have any relations or friends now that smoke.
The problem I foresee is, similar to this country, the onus of control lies with the shopkeeper. When the 14 year old is 18 there will be 19 years still legally allowed to buy cigarettes, can anybody tell the difference between an 18 and 19 year old? Do they carry ID's in New Zealand or do they plan to introduce them?
" there will be 19 year olds.."
they'll have to check id and as time goes on the age will get higher. It will just become the norm.
If they don't carry ID cards in NZ they soon will.
That awful woman in charge is turning it into Communist China.
Maybe it just means that in practice people will just start smoking legally at a later age & probably fewer will take it up so I think it's a good idea. Doesn't bode well for my tobacco company shares!
don't worry dave, they are busy getting Africa addicted.

That's great - and I think the Chinese are still on the upward curve!

Well the UK has a "full ban" on smoking cannabis. That seems to be going quite swimmingly, so I understand.
