//why are old episodes of comedy greats like Dads Army, etc being butchered?//

They're not.

You may be a victim of the Mandela Effect there.
Every late night 'comedy' host in the US for starters.
If I tell you something, you can take it to the bank.
I'm not in the habit of lying. And compared to other people on this site I seem to know a lot of stuff about a lot of things.
I'd swear a lot of them are dumped on this planet from a *** spaceship every morning. Such is their ignorance of all things pertaining to planet Earth.
Out of interest, spice, assuming you're right. Do you find that offensive, or not bothered?
I feel a certain sadness that the human race has sunk to such depths.
Like when Lord Farquaad married Princess Fiona a latter day herald has to hold up cue cards so the cretins know whether to laugh or boo.
They've gone from Norm MacDonald to this.
That's widening the scope a bit.

Also - many of us don't watch US late night talk shows - because, well because we're in the UK.

And I thought that the thrust of this thread was UK comedy.

Not US talk shows.

And even so - could you not argue that you have plenty of right wing US shock jocks and radio commentators who do exactly the same - but target liberals?

Spice... the depths are the same. I more meant, do you personally find it offensive, when the target is a "group" you are in?
I think it's important that we continue to hear stupid opinions as well as reasonable ones.
Spice, Colbert has always been topical, from the early days of The Colbert Report. Much like John Oliver or Trevor Noah, he tackles the most topical political and cultural issues. Nothing is more topical currently than Covid, so you're going to get a lot of that kind of stuff at the moment.
Fair play to Trevor Noah for at least recognising Smollett is MAABOF. Something many others are still ignoring.

I think comedy is in rude health and this thread (the fact that it's moved into an area which has nothing to do with the question) is proof of this.

Cancel culture is having a negligent effect on comedy.
Douglas I like Milton Jones brand of madness, but not Stewart Francis, i simply don't get his comedy.
do you honestly expect comedians not to make fun of donald trump?
must say I am quite happy for the anti-vax movement to be mocked as well...
The easiest of easy targets Untitled. As is Boris Johnson. It's no different than Reagan and Thatcher on Spitting Image back in the 80s.
Indeed...
Why did you post that^?
