Finished this but what are the include 2 letter pairs? Some are elements but not all? What have I missed???

I couldn't see a connection (doesn't mean there isn't one), I thought the pairs were random.

Not so odd, it's the Guardian, it could be anything - the setters think themselves above normal conventions (since the dreadful Araucaria gave them free rein) & are so far up their own egos they think they can do no wrong.

Yes, I know I'm in a huge minority regarding Araucaria :-)
