Just wandering, what did our fore fathers use as glue without pva and pritt stick?

I am looking for an eco friendly, possibly home made alternative to glue as I do lots of crafting with my children andj I hate thinking about all that pva goind down the sink when we wash up...

cheers.

erm a mix of flour and water, its no super clue but works for paper etc
yes, flour and water works a treat
I think our forefathers tended to boil down horses and other animals to make glue.

It is very eco friendly but I don't think you'd want to have to answer "Mummy where does our glue come from?"

:c)
hey Ratter15 i valued your input on the coffin idea by the way, i had overloocked the idea of weight, i mean i knew it would be heavy, but i hadn't thought about the fact that in 20 years i may weight 20 stone.

do you solely do metal art? i do odds and ends when i get a chance, its an amazing material.

thanks for your anxwers guys. Does anyone know the ratios for the flour and water and presumably it has to be a wheat or gluten based flour does it?

cheers.
Just mix it until the consistency is right and then I think you need to leave it 30 mins, just experiment a bit.

Boink, Hiya, yes I work with metal only, I expect you have seen my website, I wont post it on here, people will think I'm advertising as Ive posted it on here before. contact me on metalartist.co.uk if want the address or add me to MSN Messenger
One recipe says

1/2 cup flour
3 cups boiling water
3/4 cup cold water

Slowly pour cold water into flour and stir to make a paste. Pour paste into the boiling water, stirring constantly. Cook for 5 minutes or until the paste is thick and smooth.

Hope that helps

That sounds like too much information. I think I'll be using a wet sponge pad in future then.
Years ago they used flour and water to paste wallpaper no fancy wallpaper pastes then. It is also good to make papier mache.
I remember a thing called Gum Arabic. It was a brown block that you put in boiling water. I wonder what that was made of ?
How do dead horses become known as fish glue do you think ?
Gum Arabic is the sap of an acacia tree - edible and non-toxic.

mix glycerine and gelatine .strongest homemade glue besides the good old flour+water glue.
Gum Arabic is also used for glazing chocolate products such as chocolate Brazils etc and as a binder and fuel in firework manufacture.
