Why Is What Happens In Soaps Considered News?

My dislike of soaps is well known and I rarely join into threads about them but isn't it a sad indictment of society that these shows amuse and addict so many supposedly "intelligent" people? So much so that the comings and goings are considered news? Are the lives of so many so empty that they must indulge in this depressing drivel?

They are not wanted because people associate them with Corrie too much, not because they are bad actors. They enjoy working in their soaps. It's suits their lifestyle. It's a steady income!! But you don't watch soaps. As I said you just assume. So basically, I totally disagree with you.

"Soaps have become a constant deluge of violence, misery and despair with hardly any humour" - were not the works of Shakespeare, Dickens etc exactly that? Poor Nancy in Oliver Twist met a sticky end at the hands of a violent lover.

I watched Corrie for years from the very first episode but then we lived abroad for several years and when we came back it had changed so much,new characters etc that I've never watched it since.Never watched Eastenders or Emmerdale.
I do like a soap opera for a bit escapism though and have got addicted to those Spanish ones on Netflix. Much the same but with lovely sunshine and handsome men instead of wet cobblestones,hairnets and bottles of stout.
Horses for courses..one man's meat etc.
OFAH was a bit like a soap opera actually :)

That's just the thing Shaney. A bit of escapeism that doesn't involve using one's brain to work out the plot. I need it these days. But if I miss a few episodes of Corrie never bothers me.

Lottie, I watched three.
Velvet,about a fashion house in Madrid and the people working in it,Gran Hotel and Cable Girls.I think they're still on Netflix ,just do a search.
