I'm all for ID and think we should have a National ID Card.

I dislike being told to pay for a document I will never use (Passport).

If the Card linked to by Tora will be acceptable then I will go for that.
// You get Photo ID at the Post office for £15. I assume the right to vote is worth more than 15 sovs??// TTT

foo wha' ? on the day ?

gormless is as gormless writes

voter suppression lives on in England....
No-one wants to ban postal voting. But it shouldn't be an automatic 'right'.
Even you lefties know it's being abused and yet you turn a blind eye to it. You would be ashamed if you had a scrap of decency left.
If that is you in the ID photo, Togo, you are seriously ugly..........
Post Office PASS card and CitizenCard are essentially the same thing and currently cost £15 every three years (equivalent to £50 per decade or 2/3 the cost of a passport).
Atheist 19:400,no one has to buy themselves the right to vote, the polling card is delivered to your door for you and you take it to the
polling station to vote,it's free,it will not cost you a bean.Voting is from 7:00am to 10:00 pm so if you are wanting to vote you have every opportunity.
// and you take it to the polling station to vote,it's free,//

new or old rules ?

old rules - you do NOT have to take the card to the polling station in order to vote
fcc, my reference to paying to vote was inspired by a poster who said that ID would only cost £15.00. I know how to vote under current rules, but I suspect that introducing ID and banning postal votes is just a ruse to discourage undesirables from using their franchise - it's what the Republicans are trying to push in the USA, along with gerrymandering (which they invented).
Once I would have objected, but not now. Society has changed so much, When in France I had to produce my Carte Vitale and proof of address in order to vote in local elections. No-one had any problem with it. I couldn't use my passport (it's in my maiden name and has expired) but I could use my Bus Pass, which was FREE!

Councils are saying that they will provide identification cards and I assume that these will be the same as the Bus pass. You turn up with proof of habitation and some bills and there you are.

I'm afraid it is now needed. There have been too many instances of fraud in the last 20 years.

I would also tighten up on postal votes. Certainly they should exist for those unable to vote (I used one myself once) but they have become unsafe. I know this will come as heresay but I spoke to the people myself. In the S-E Asian communities in my part of the W. Riding, I was often told by children, who were proud, that the Elders had visited their house to show their parents where to put their X and then collect the completed forms. Many of the parents did not speak English. Colleagues confirmed that they had been told the same.

Sad that we have to change our ways, but it is necessary.
^^ ^^^
And that's exactly why if you want to vote you should have to go to the polling station, plenty of lifts are available if needed.
Question Author
For those who are saying the cost may stop people voting.
From the link.

\\The measures will apply across the UK in general elections and councils will make a free voter card available for those without a suitable form of ID.//

Free...
if they abolish postal voting, then i won't get to vote,
spicerack: "No-one wants to ban postal voting. But it shouldn't be an automatic 'right'.
Even you lefties know it's being abused and yet you turn a blind eye to it. You would be ashamed if you had a scrap of decency left. " - well it's primarily the left that benefit from fraudulent postal block voting.
TTT, I and many thousands of of others are housebound with one disability or another. How do you suggest that we exercise our right to vote?
Emmie, //if they abolish postal voting, then i won't get to vote, //

Why not? You're not housebound.
