There seems to be a problem with this. I thought Battista but I'm wrong. Pauline Ward thinks Baptista but Mariano Baptista's surname was Caserta! Anyone else have anything to say?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The reason for this is that in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, children take the surname of both the mother and the father, so they have 2 surnames (in fact especially in aristocratic families they keep both surnames of each parent and even grandparent, so a person's full name can go and on!) So what looks like a middle name to us is actually a surname.
