of course we all know the first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong but did you know why? It wasn't pre ordained it was because the design of the lunar module put him nearest the door, it could just as easily have been Buzz Aldrin.

I have always suspected that Armstrong was supposed to say "A small step for one man; a giant leap for mankind."
I reckon he got his "one" a bit muddled, in the excitement of the moment.

He maintained he said, "That's one small step for a man..." and an expert's analysis of the audio confirmed that but even slowing down the audio on YouTube, I cannot hear "a man".

There is a longish gap until the "Mankind" bit and I think that's because he knew he'd made a mistake.
