I tripped, fell on my back but left with no voice - I can only whisper.

Otherwise no lasting injury but how long for voice to return & why?

Any pain on breathing deeply?

If all else seems well it's like temporary, monitor for a while.
That's strange. Maybe get a family member to have word with Doctor for you. Best wishes.
From what little information that you have given it is most unlikely that your speech mechanism has been damaged

Most unlikely.

The voice loss is probably psychosomatic (shock)

Give it a couple of days, the if o improvement go to A&E where, where a competent ENT doctor can look down.

I am sure that is no big deal.

no breathing pain or any pain. Cough sounds muffled & voice counting 1-7 only before whisper kicks in.

Sqad what is 'look down' by doc?
Have a look down your throat
Camera investigation via a nasal camera under local anaesthetic.

Will throat exploration repair vocals?
It might if they are damaged but in my opinion your voice problem is psychosomatic (functional aphonia)..........

thanx sqad will update when vocals return. Worst is cant chat to son Frazer & he is upset, he has enuf problems without mine.
Incredibly sqad first take in Devonport Aug 1976 - TWO aphonics on same night - and none since. Recovered in 48h
Devonport?
In Plymouth?
devonport in plymouth
the very place
Hospital now a housing block ( not very good quaiity)
the water tower remains ( sluice of Charles Lander ward)

if you are around 120 ( years of age that is!) - used to be Royal Albert and Edward ( I think)
This happened to me at primary school, it didn't last but made me wary of mashed potato dropped on a tiled floor.
I live in Devonport...it's got a lot of history.
I'll have to look for the water tower...and Google the hospital.
To Peter...I think the housing you refer to was demolished about 12 years ago...and replaced with more upmarket flats.

Sorry for derailing your thread Tambo. I hope your voice problem resolves itself quickly.
