Johnson Goes To Kyiv ...

Presumably now Liz Truss has been stricken with Covid, or at least tested positive.
A cynic might say first the Met rides to the rescue and now an LFT ...
But I couldn't possibly comment.
Sorry to raise this subject again.
I wonder that sort of diplomatic talks the PM can have with President Zelensky have in the matter of "avoiding further bloodshed". 13-14,000 have already died in this conflict in the past 8 years, since the "imminent invasion" in 2014.
This whole thing is most odd.

Fair play to you if you want to risk that but even were it true it doesn’t amount to much of a defence.
In 1994 (or thereabouts) Russia signed an agreement guaranteeing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
In 1997 in fact Yeltsin signed an agreement that in principle said Russia did not object to NATO expansion,
Unfortunately we know how Russia honours the agreements it signs

ichi; I can name off the top of my head many Russian writers but I can't Ukrainians writing in 'Ukraine'
One of the most famous who came from Ukraine was Gogol, but he wrote in Russian, most of the earlier ones from the region wrote in Russian or Latin.

I don't know of that, but it sounds like "in principle" lacks clarity.

"US trying to draw Russia into war, Putin says"
Damn right they are!

Biden made such a cock-up in Afghanistan & with China watching with Taiwan in its sights, he now wants to show he is really a tough guy.
It's all terribly predictable & tragic; American once again playing war-games while being safely 8,000 kms away from any possible danger.

dannyk, yes, as I recall Sarah Palin claimed to be able to see Russia from her house (or Tina Fey said it for her), and it's true

“ American once again playing war-games”
Which is odd because I could have sworn it was Russian forces “on manoeuvres” on the N and E borders of Ukraine not US.
Is there anything Putin says you wouldn’t believe I wonder?
The tactic of the west here it seems is to talk up and highlight the threat in the hope that it will make Putin reconsider whatever aggression he may have in mind.
It may be that if there comes a time when it’s clear there will be no further incursions into Ukraine territory Putin can turn round and say “You see? This was just sabre rattling by the nasty old West. I was never going to do anything. I’m a good boy”
And that may be seen as a propaganda win of sorts for him.
But if the alternative was:
“You see? Those nasty Ukrainians killing our citizens in E Ukraine? I had to do something!”
Then the first scenario is way preferable.
Hence I’m sure how quick the State Department was to highlight the likelihood of that potential tactic.

danny, we have been through that daft pub-quiz question of the two tiny islands in the middle of the Bering straits. The real issue is the distance between Kiev & Washington.
Distance To Washington From Kiev is: 4870 miles / 7837.51 km / 4231.91 nautical miles.
A nice comfortable distance from the Oval Office.
ichi: If you want to check, Russian troops have been more or less permanently stationed near the borders with the West for ages, why has it suddenly been highlighted now ? so asked the Russian ambassador on TV the other night, but answer came there none.
Where else would you place your troops & military equipment but near your borders?
