I obviously haven't keep the answers/explanation that came with my returned result.

I suggest you write to Neville for more info - I know he explained his reasoning.
Sorry for my tardy response Goofy.

Thanks anyway
Neville's answer: This was a relatively easy clue but in order to fit the stated number of letters it was necessary for you to come up with the alternative spelling of 'archeologist' which has its own entry in Chambers. Although the dictionary says that this was usually the American spelling, it is not exclusively so. Egyptologist the most frequently suggested alternative just did not fit the clue.
I still don't know why they didn't just say 13 letters, after all it didn't have to fit in to a grid
"the alternative spelling of 'archeologist' which has its own entry in Chambers" suggests "archeology" has a separate entry from "archaeology".

I've not looked in my physical copy of Chambers but searching it online for "archeologist", it's not a separate entry.

The word is included in the heading of, "archaeology or (US) archeology".

I'm not convinced that "Egyptologist", with the connexion to a form of housing, pyramids, "just did not fit the clue."

(I have no interest in the outcome by the way)
Perhaps the use of the American spelling was to confuse folk or an error was made?
Thanks Foxlee, it's always the replies you don't keep that are the ones people ask about.

This is another reason that i send in uncompleted entries, to get the answers.

Neither I nor lots of posters thought it was 'relatively easy' thus the number of posts about it! Would have been easier just to say 13 letters
Well it was a relatively easy clue and the obvious immediate answer was archaeologist until the letter count was done and it didn't fit which lead to all the questioning. I thought Egyptologist was a good answer and the one I went for.
Another answer I disagreed with was question 81 'How spin bowlers make a meal of the batting side'. I went with Turnovers rather than my other option of Breakfast but Neville declared that turnovers were hardly a meal. I beg to differ - I make beef turnovers from a recipe I once cut out of a magazine.
