I bought two first class single tickets to Stoke and back, for Sunday 20th and Tuesday 22nd February. I was travelling to go to a funeral.

Due to the storms, I decided not to go. The trains were available, albeit with small timetable changes, but I thought it wiser to stay at home.

Today, I applied, on the off chance, for a refund on my tickets.

The refund was duly given. No questions asked. I am so pleased.

Well done Avanti. Excellent customer service!

not to diminish your praise for them, but in their position I'd just meet every refund request lodged on storm days; they'll have too many requests to dither over, especially if their Haggling unit has been hit by either Covid or a falling tree.
Not making the connection between refunds and an office populated solely by young witches.

Well, I'm happy. Otherwise, it would have been £90.00 down the drain.

I know they must be inundated with refund requests. I just got lucky, I suppose. I did think that because it was my choice not to go, I wouldn't be eligible for a refund. However... :-)
blimey train tickets are expensive!
I expect you could quality for saver tickets by arranging the funeral a few months in advance
Know how you feel, Tilly. Once received a full though not entitled to refund for an air ticket from Ryanair. The travel insurance company that should have paid up were wriggling out of paying for all they were worth.
