Someone told me that as well as shelling whole prawns i should also pull out the vein that runs along the top middle of the prawn or risk food poisoning. Is this person having me on?

It seems like even more effort in preparation that i could be doing without

Please help!

Yes it is best to remove the intestinal vein, It will not give you food poisoning but it is best to take it out then rinse..

pleeeeeease take it out!! i went to a very posh restaraunt in London and they hadnt removed it-i couldnt beleive it because as a chef it is drummed into you to remove it! yuk!! definately wont give you food poisoning but as far as i am concerned its their poo and i for one dont want to eat it!!! lol
you would only do this in the big prawns though, wouldn't you? Tiger type? Not the ordinary sized ones, surely?
you should do it with all prawns
well it prob won't give you FP but it is the intesinal tract so, well i wouldn't want to eat it!

Do you fillet your whitebait aswell, wonderwoman?

Larger, giant prawns and tiger prawns - yes. Anything else - don't bother.
i'm just letting you know what we were taught at cookery school, thats all!
It's not that much extra effort, unless you've got hundreds of them it doesn't take too long - just slit along the back, rinse in a bowl of water, transfer to a bowl of salted water to store.
i didn't know you should store in salt water - cooked and uncooked?
Either, crisgal - and it enhances the flavour too. But I'm talking storing for 20 mins or so while you prepare the rest of the meal - not overnight or they'll start to lose their texture.
