I've taken out the hard-drive on a defunct laptop and I want to use it as extra space on another laptop and desktop. so I've put it together OK, but I can't get it to operate, it says 'system reserved'.

Have you tried formatting the drive, to wipe whatever was on it before? (System Reserved is a special partition, holding boot-up data, that is used before Windows is loaded. You only need it on your boot drive, so you can wipe it on an auxiliary drive)):
