'DAX' on my BT Line

I have just changed my Orange phone contract to a longer one that includes broadband for �30.00 per month. I had to wait till the end of last month for my contract to change and I phoned Orange this morning to ask them to register and activate my broadband. They checked my phone line and came back and said that they found a 'DAX' on my line which BT would have to remove before Orange could activate the broadband. The person I spoke to tried to explain what this was but I didn't have a clue - something to do with one BT line being split in to 2 separate lines capable of voice transmission but not suitable for a broadband connection!?! Can anyone shed any further light on this? Also I was told by Orange that there would be no need for an engineer to come into my house. I thought that there would be something that would have to be installed inside like a cable or something - is this normal? I'm currently on dial-up and thought it was time to make the switch. Any thoughts appreciated!

this is where bt cut costs and put two phone lines on one cable. ok for voice but unsuitable for internet so bt will have to "undacs" the line by removin the dacs unit and installin another cable to replace the line lost. This is highly unlikely as bt did it for a reason in the first place. Ring bt and explain and see if they cooperate.
