Whats convoluted? You just need to set up an iplayer login and confirm you have a licence,,, although i agree that a non payer could easily lie and say they got a license

only because I wanted to watch the snooker
Lot of balls, in snooker that is.
Is it just the BBC that does this? I don't think so. To access any of the catch-up services (ITV Hub, All4, My 5) you have to register with them.
Didn't you have to register/ make an account when you joined AB? What's the big deal?
What do you have to do to register?

I haven't paid thousands of quids to AB!
I'm watching the snooker on 601
You wanted to watch the snooker?

It sounds as if you may be going in off

Black pots matter.
It's laughable isn't it? Took me most of an afternoon to sign in to all the players and, yes, they ask you daft things like have you got a TV licence, who is watching, are you over 18 and WOW you can pay a monthly subscription to do away with the adverts!!!! There was no stress when we only had two channels and we used to watch the test card and interludes like the "Potter's Wheel" for most of the day!!!
//only because I wanted to watch the snooker//
perhaps you need to take a break
