the law is straightforward - if the child is taken into care and adopted, and "then parent didnt do it" - then the decisions hinge on what is best for the child
usually to stay with the adopting parents

age of majority is 16 here by the way ( 18 for a few things)

As Peter says, the suspect has been made an arguido (cautioned person). The Police have done this as they will run out of the 15 year time limit in a couple of days. Once that happens he would not be able to be charged for any offence relating to this case in the future. So all they have done is safeguarded the possibility of charging him should sufficient evidence be found in the future. Suspecting someone is vastly different to proving it.

Fair enough - I wasn't actually disagreeing with Anne's view, it's one I share, sadly, I was merely interested in asking what shaped her view in the first place, and I think a lot of peole would agree, tragic though that would be.

If the McCanns and friends had followed the European model, and simply taken their children with them to the restaurant, this tragedy could have been avoided.

Speaking personally, I did then, and do now, like having my children with me while I eat with them, and when they were too small, we brought pushchairs and the children went to sleep in them, and we could enjoy ourselves knowing they were safe.

I could no more leave my children asleep and take turns to 'check on them' and eat a meal, than fly to the moon.

I am not being judgemental, simply underlining again that our approach with our children was singularly 'European' forty years ago - British parents seemed to feel they could only 'relax' if their children were not with them.

i never mentioned there was i was saying that butlins customers left their kids alone all be it with a child watch service every now and then but that would not stop anyone with intent to take child even if these camps were supposedly closed off,no cctv in those days either

Totally agree Andy.
That's how children also learn to behave when eating out. Bedtime routines are fine on school days.

We basically all went to bed at the same on our caravan holidays and holidays overseas. And it wasn't early. We enjoyed being with our child and he was very confident and we'll behaved. I have never believed in shoving kids to bed so parents can get some time off!

To add to the long list of things to feel bad about in British history; Slavery, Empire etc. we can now add, the past neglect of children at Butlin's !

How can any of us get to sleep at night?

11.52..imho a lot of Spanish parents are either too mean or hard up to use baby sitters, I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen kids out at night with their parents, falling asleep, or crabby due to tiredness. And when I say late I mean late, eg after midnight.
