Cloning Laptop System Disk
5 Answers
I have a HP Pavilion laptop. The system disk is 450 GB and I want to clone this perfectly working disk to a larger SSD (1TB). I have made several attempts using either Macrium (free tool) or Minitool Shadowmaker. The Macrium version ran for almost a week and when it eventually ended the log showed that the job failed after a short period with error message 'failed to get completion message'. Then after erasing partitions I started again this time using Minitool Shadowmaker. After 9 hours it showed 1% of job was completed. Obviously I did'nt see any point in letting it continue so I cancelled it. Anyone goy advice on how I can successfully clone the smaller disk to a 1TB SSD. I recently I did the same job using Macrium on an Apple Macbook and did not encounter any problem. I'm open to suggestions not involving the clone utility. Any help will be appreciated, us usual. Once you've got the system image you can swap the system disc in your laptop for the new one, start up the machine with the system repair disc and restore your system onto the SSD.
Your old system disc is completely unaffected by this, so you can always put it back in if there's a problem. Just be aware that you will need some medium to create your system image on; an external HDD is good.

If you get really desperate this will work:
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
I got one a year or so ago as an easy way to use old drives that had been replaced by bigger ones. You can clone a disc with it in stand-alone mode, hot mount 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives as well as SD cards and it also has 2 USB 2 sockets.
