I've boarded, and departed from, a ship at sea by using a rope ladder but it was at anchor and in reasonably calm conditions. I'm not sure that I'd fancy this woman's job though!

Actually Chris, while you're here.....I've been trying to find out if we need an ETIAS for the trip as I've heard that sometimes just the ship needs one, and it covers all the passengers.

We're going to Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. I've tried to find out about entry requirements without success. I do know we don't need a VISA.

As you're a seasoned traveller (and very knowledgeable on most things) - do you know anything about this new ETIAS? I've tried to ask the cruise line but can't get through on the phone.

You certainly won't need an ETIAS for travel later this year, Windywillow, as the system won't be in place by then.

There are loads of 'ETIAS' websites that can be found through Google but they're nearly all commercial sites which will want you to use their services to pay an extra (and totally unnecessary) 'processing fee' when it eventually becomes possible to apply for an ETIAS. As they've been created at different times, and the European Commission has kept pushing back the date for the implementation of the ETIAS scheme, they tend to suggest different (and almost always incorrect) dates for the start of the scheme.

This, however, is from the website of the European Commission itself:
"[Q] When will ETIAS be ready?

[A] ETIAS is expected to be operational by May 2023."
