check your brake fluid level
Probably a duff abs sensor on one of the wheels or one of the plugs on them. It will need to be plugged into a diagnostic computer to determine with wheel it is though. When the abs warning light is on the abs won't be working.

As I say,jj. Most probably a duff abs sensor or the electrical plug on one of them.
Others have largely answered your question but, for completeness, I'll refer you to this (US) web page, which covers the issue quite well:

I've just had to have a new one on my Hyundai i10 too, rear driver's side, it cost me £155.
It'll be an MoT failure if you don't get it done. On the other hand it could be a jenyyjoan failure if you need ABS and it doesn't work.

thanks for the answers but until I get to a motor mechanic - is my car too dangerous to drive in the meantime?
cars didn't used to have ABS, so I would argue that you can't be any worse off than you would be driving an older car.
