Low Carb Diet

Anyone tried (or is on) a low carb diet such as paleo, Atkins or something similar?
Im trying to shift a bit of lard and 'dieting' as such doesnt really float my boat. Calorie counting just leaves me feeling deprived and hungry so ive cut out carbs such as bread, rice and potatoes (and junk such as crisps and cake) and make up with extra veg.
today's food consumption has been:
breakfast...banana, strawberries, 1/4 pint of milk (smoothie)
dinner...tin tuna and huge salad
tea...pork chop and a mountain of veg, gravy
The above doesnt look like a lot of food but like I said the salad and veg intake has been huge and I havnt felt hungry or deprived.
Just wondered if anyone else has cut out carbs and felt better/lost weight in the long run?
(I know theres also carbs in fruit and veg but just trying to reduce, not eliminate also not particularly following any 'diet plan')

Hiya nailit....I've been 'living' low carb for just over 4 years...its a way of life now,as any successful eating plan should be.
I've been following TheHarcombe diet...moderate low carb for most,though some need to go quite low. I lost 1 1/2 st in three months.It differs in that it's based on the theory that fats should not be mixed with carbs. This is because if eaten together,the body will burn carbs first,and still hold on to the fat. There is a lot of science attached to eating low carb...including the fact that the body does not *need* carbs...we can live without them,but not without fat/protein. For that reason,higher fat diets are being researched(the connection between heart health and saturated fat has never been proven)...fat being what's on your meat,full fat dairy,cooking fat such as coconut oil,butter,olive oil and even lard. As for carbs...all fruit and veg have carbs(as do dairy)...its a matter of choosing wisely. Start with leafy greens plus broccoli and cauli....cauli is a great substitute for potatoes...brilliant mashed with cream and butter.The best fruit are berries,followed by apples and I believe pears.

This site is good and free for keeping tabs on what you are eating, especially when trying to work how many carbs or sugar is in a type of food.

I have been on crash diets before (cabbage soup diet was harsh but worked), but I have never been able to dedicate myself to a proper, moderate diet, I like food too much and lack persistence. I am pretty much on the go all day, so I am fortunate enough not to have to worry about weight. I ensure I have more veg than meat and potatoes, and having never had a sweet tooth am not particularly fussed about pud.
I find, and avoid, certain foods that trouble me. Bread and potato bloat me and make me feel sluggish shortly after.
A few tips, though:
Tin tuna - buy in spring water, not brine
Pork chop - lubbly jubbly, but trim the rind off (i'll eat that, it's the best part!)
Gravy - a no no, especially if you add the fat from the meat.
In my experience, if you are a snacker, you are best off eating raisins (high in sugar) than crisps (higher in fat).

Thanks for that AlwaysConfused. Never been on a crash diet, apart from seeing them as unhealthy Ive always known that I couldnt stick to one.

Reading up on low card diets seems to present a plethora of contradictory info...some sources say to include dairy, others not. Same with veg, some veg is ok, others not. A lot of websites say to consume only grass fed animals and wild caught fish etc, Bit difficult to do on a budget.

Nailit...your best bet is to eat "real food"... Meaning the least processed the better. Don't worry about grass fed,etc. Most of us can't afford that. The prohibition on dairy is Paleo...again I would not be too concerned about that. Only limit if it stops weight loss,as it does for some. Really try to stay off the bread/wheat. The fact that you craved it is a good reason to stay away from it. Actually,research has shown that wheat is addictive,it acts on certain parts of the brain in the same way as certain other addictive substances. Read " Wheat Belly"...written by an American cardiologist who found restricting wheat in his patients diets brought much improved health.
