Why on earth did I think he was blind? Anyone else think that? I would have a lost a lot of money if I'd put my money where my brain was

I must have been dreaming.
I also vividly recall him appearing on a UK tv show such as Pebble Mill at One and totally missing his cue to start singing (miming) - not his fault, there were technical problems and he couldn't hear the music. He thought it very funny and they all had a good laugh.
I must have dreamt that, too, because he died in 1988 and I thought the show aired much later than that.

Remember Lord Rockinghams' XI? They had a hit with a tune called Hoots Mon. One of the sax players was Benny Green. They were due to perform on TV but Green said the strong lighting was hurting his eyes, so could he wear dark glasses?
