Hang on - what am I missing here with MattHau? Which is fine except that the 'h' must be the 'm' from 6D 'Pooterism', noun, not an 'h' from 'Pooterish', adjective, if we are looking at 'conventionality' (noun) as the definition. And surely also the anagram is from the suffering 'poor times', which has no 'h' for poor Walter. Is this just a simple error from the compiler? Or am I making a fool of myself??? But I see Tedsgran below is also on this track.

19a does parse with Matthau -- MATT(E) + HAU(L), but I agree it does seem the 5th letter should be an M not an H.
