I Saw A Wren In My Garden This Morning For The First Time Ever.

I recognized it because whoever modelled it's image on the farthing coin had done such a good job.

Lovely sight is it not? They have strange habits though, never feed from the bird table nor drink from the bird bath but prefer to dip in and out of the garage guttering. I can watch them from the kitchen window.

The Wren's current UK population estimate is the highest for any species and, on the latest figures, one in eight of our breeding birds is a Wren. Abundance can vary sharply from year to year, however. Wren numbers in the UK were greatly depleted by the cold winter of 1962/63. Following a rapid recovery up to the mid 1970s, abundance fell again in response to a further series of cold winters, only to return to its previous high level. Following recent severe winters, numbers were somewhat depleted once more, especially in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but have now recovered. The BBS map of change in relative density between 1994-96 and 2007-09 indicates that there was a gradient of change over that period, from minor decrease in parts of Southern England to strong increase in North Wales, Northern England and Mainland Scotland. There has been an increase across Europe since 1980. [i]

yeth I had a wren in my garding - I called her Jenny....

I even wrote and posted a letter to the 6 y old next door about it. ( well there are a ltd set of things a 70y can properly write to a 6 y.o and young ladies like getting post)

effect of heat loss in a small animal - altho the surface area is small the S.A. per gm is much greater than say an elephant

they presumably are in the category of shrews and have to ear 1/2 body weight of food per day

Looking out into the garden a few minutes ago I saw a mouse hanging on one of the bird feeders.
I'm happy enough with that as long as it stays outside.
