Is Anyone Concerned About Walking Their Dog On Hot Pavements In This Heat?
37 Answers
Two friends of mine have very kindly offered to walk my little dog on their way home from work on Friday when the temperature is forecast to be 25 degrees with a moderate breeze. I am thinking I might have to call it off as surely that is too hot for his little feet. If it was all on grass it would be OK but it can't be.
All opinions welcome and thank you.

No dog died from not being walked but dogs have died from heat exhaustion

I've just lost a long reply and I can't write it all again. But thank you, all of you who have taken the trouble to answer and offer advice.
I shall try SB's suggestion as a guy in my flats has a contraption in which he walks his little 18 year old. I'm not sure J will get in it. He likes to sniff sniff sniff the ground all the time. I will also try him with the socks.
I will certainly try the hand on the pavement thing.
RH I hope he tells me in his way whether he wants to go out or not.
Whatever happens he will get his early morning walk with our dog walker when he is driven with others to a spot in the countryside or large park where there are plenty of trees. I think he will let me know if he wants to go or not. xx

There is no possible reason to walk a dog in the heat - why take the chance and risk your dog's health. Mine won't be going out after about 7 am. Dogs don't know what is good for them - like the cockadoodlepoo cross at the weekend whose owner was using one of those ball chuckers for about an hour till the dog actually collapsed and had to be taken to the vet. It was just going manic for him to chuck the ball without any break, stupid stupid man thought it was funny because he didn't have to move a muscle other than his left arm - which he could have exercised in a more appropriate way because he was an absolute J Arthur Ranker.
Lankeela what an idiot, I hope someone reported him and he got a talking to. On the hottest day last summer a man was on a bike with his dog's lead tethered to the handle and poor dog having to gallop round the park 2/3 times with the sweat flying off him. No stopping for a pee or sniff. I had a word with him and was told to F Off, not unexpected with a prat like him.
RH yes he's had his morning walk early but didn't get back till 11.30ish and still bouncing when he came in. He wants to go out again now, he's giving me the look and little whines. His BFF, who lives in the flat opp is taking him out @ 6pm when forecast temp is 23 degrees. I'm wondering how long he'll stay out. He's the boss and lets you know when he wants to go home. We've just nipped to the shops 20 mins ago and he walked on the pavement to the car and back no problem. It will be hotter tomorrow so we'll see. Perhaps I worry too much?
Bobs tomorrow might be different, hotter so I will make up my mind then. There will be a stronger breeze so ... we'll see.
Thank you all for taking an interest in my wee Jay.

Thanks Barry. I know they don't sweat but it was a black dog, looked very very shiny so appeared wet. It was a very hot day and I did not see the bike stop at all. The only thing I can think of was it was getting squirted with water at some point out of sight. If so he could have told me that instead of swearing at me.
That reminds me of a woman jogging around our park lb. As she jogged she was sipping from a water bottle, but her little dog had to keep running after her with no water for him and it was a scorching day. I asked her where the dog's water was and she actually had the decency to slow down and let the little thing catch up. I never got the abuse I expected. Some people are SO selfish and mean.
