Smelly Rug After Cleaning

I recently hired a carpet cleaner to clean my large rug in my living room. I used advised shampoo and followed instructions but it’s left it smelly damp and rank. Any suggestions to get rid of the pong !!

Hang it up somewhere to dry,
then spray it with a scent you like.
After that give it a promotion to a higher rank.

Can you drag it outside and leave it in bright sunshine?

Sounds like it hasn’t dried properly, get it out tin the fresh air, but you may need a professional cleaner to do it for you

Is it wool? They tend to soak up an awful lot of water, and smell like a sheep until they dry out.

Sometimes when you clean something you don't normally clean for the first time it will raise and give off odours that were lying dormant so you may need to wash it again to get rid of odour.

It happened to me when I first used a washing machine cleaner. I followed the instructions but there was a nasty odour coming from inside the drum so I had to clean it again and it smelled fresh afterwards.
