Ipod Nano

Hi there, am thinking of buying a Nano for my sister for Christmas (a while off I know) but I want to know if you can only use I-Tunes Downloaded music onto the ipod. Will it support music downloaded from another source - I read the small print on the apple website and it mentions music with licence only, but I don't know if thats just on there to make clear that apple do not support illegal downloads?
Any help is gratefully received am wanting to buy it today/tomorrow.

iTunes is the best program to use with iPods, simply because they're designed for each other. With iTunes you can download music illegally, and put it into iTunes, so that when you connect your iPod it'll put that music on too. It'll also let you rip your CDs onto the iPod.

Whichever one you buy, make sure it's the 2G model, made from aluminium.

You have to use iTunes to transfer your songs on to your iPod Nano.
An iPod can support the following file formats:
MP3, M4P (AAC), AIFF, WAV etc . . .

I use both MP3 and AAC files on my iPod. I've only used music purchased from Apple's iTunes Music Store, so I don't know if the iPod works with music purchased from elsewhere. I also import my CD's in to iTunes as both MP3 and AAC and then transfer them to my iPod.
