My daughter needs to have a fixed brace.The orthodontist has sent us away to have a think about it.Ive been told by a relative that her neice is having one and being charged �2000(shes 16 and in full time education).
I assumed it was free for kids.Does anybody know?

I don`t know if its private or not. She`s had check ups there several times but we`ve never had to pay before.

That's confusing. If he's not an NHS dentist, and you don't pay, how does he make his money?

you can get a referral to an nhs orthodontist, although this will take significantly longer than going private (it has taken my son 4 years and he is just starting consults at age 15). be proactive and start ringing orthodontists near you to see what their waiting lists are like and get her referred NOW! the impression that i got when this process started for my son was that they delayed things for so long that they could try and get us to pay for it, but i basically badgered everybody i could think of, put in complaints to the local health authority about the ridiculous position we were in and hey presto! we were found a dentist. kepp going, there is no need to pay and good luck!

you can get a brace free on the NHS but only if the orthodontist thinks it is severe enough.. otherwise you pay. the rules changed about 18 months ago.

my daughter was offered a free one aged 13 but didn't want it. I took her back aged 14, and the rules had changed so she couldn't get it for free as her teeth weren't that bad.

children are not automatically entitled to free orthodontic treatment (braces etc) any more. the orthodontist does an assessment and the child gets a two part score, the first depend on how out of alignment the teeth are (a score of 1-5) If the child scores 4 or 5 they are entitled to free treatment If they score 1 or two they are not, and will have to pay or not have it done. If they score 3 then they then have to look atpictures of teeth and say which one resembles their teeth. This is to asses what the psychological damage to the child is about their teeth. That is scored out of 10. If the child gets a score of 5 or over, they will get the treatment. So anything over 3.5 will qualify for free

Ethel,our detist isn`t NHS but my daughter is 14, therefore she doesn`t have to pay(or at least i don`t).

if the orthodontist ever does the tests to see if it is needed, then prime your daughter to pick the worse looking teeth on the pictures! in case she is in the "3" bracket
