a local shepherd lets his sheep wander all over the village where i stay,they come into gardens to eat everything,they have also damaged cars by "head butting" them.
is there anything i can do? if they are on my private land do i have the right to keep them?
the police say they cannot do anything unless they cause an obstruction on public roads.

Historically it could be that the village has a charter allowing the grazing of animals on common land and that would mean any grassy knolls in the village where you stay. if you are going to stay in the village any longer maybe you should do some research at your local library about it, or contact your Local History Society.

(2) If not claimed by the owner within forty-eight hours, a person detaining stray livestock shall forthwith transmit to the municipal clerk an adequate description of the livestock that will enable the owner to recognize it together with an indication of the time and place of finding and the place where the livestock is detained.
