12 Answers
i dont eat a lot of fried food, but sometimes really fancy something deep fried. Is there such a thing as a small deep fat fryer big enough for 1 or 2 portions that is suitable for very occasional use?

We bought a Tefal Oleo fryer over a year ago. It's not small but has the advantage that you can drain and filter the oil automatically after use and then stick all but the heater element in the dishwasher. The filtered oil can stay in the sealed container in the base of the unit until you are ready to use it again when you just pour it back into to main unit. Very convenient.
The Oleo is a good price at Amazon just now Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
It's the fat-draining and storage that's convenient, barry. We still use a pan on the hob for chips and it's a faff having to pour the fat into a bottle using a funnel so that you can clean the pan. We've still got the chip pan sitting waiting to be emptied a week after last week's egg and chips; the oleo is effortless (but I can't make good chips init).
I remember when every house I went in to as a kid had a saucepan half full of solid, dirty lard on the cooker, waiting for the next batch of chips. It would be topped up with used fat from frying pans and roasting tins and if you'd run out of fat for your egg, you'd take some out of the chip pan.
The chips were always fab, though.
I store my used cooking oil in a large glass jar and keep a stainless steel funnel just for that.
