The Koran is originally written in an early Arabic script called Hijazi which contains lots of small marks, like punctuation marks, the small placing of which can make a difference in the meaning of the word.
Apparently the word for virgin and raisin are easily confusable, so whether you get 72 virgins or 72 raisins is a moot point.
No self-respecting Muslim man would marry a woman who'd 'been around' so it must be assumed that the promised women are indeed virgins - at least before the wondrous faithful get their mits on them. However, continuing the discussion in that direction detracts from the horrors of the philosophy and from the appalling crimes that are committed not only against this author and others, but against freedom of expression for all - and that is the important thing here.
