Isn't the human brain marvellous? Watching On He Majesty's Secret Service and although I wasn't actually looking at the screen I heard a girl say a line and looked up as I thought it sounded just like Joanna Lumley - didn't see her but when I looked it up it was her first film role! How can you recognise one voice out of all the millions in the world? Same with singers, listening to the radio its often possible to recognise a singer by their voice even if you don't know the song.

Yes, I agree...I'm very good at voices and faces (from when they were much younger) - but hopeless at remembering names.

same with faces, two eyes a nose and a mouth yet we recognise them instantly

there are old skinflicks she's in, but I definitely wouldn't recognise her in them.

yes. That's what they look for on the X Factor. To just hear one word and you immediately know who it is. As an e.g. Think of Goldfinger and you immediately know its Shirley Bassey. Well (elongated) and its Lulu, etc etc.

It is marvellous indeed. Why just this morning I heard a voice saying 'bring down the dark washing basket' and I thought to myself 'will I ***, who do you think you are, Joanna Lumley?'
