I recently had a divan bed delivered in two parts but it wouldn't fit up the stairs at the turning point so it had to go back. Any ideas how to measure the stairs as I don't think it's that straightforward due to angling the item being delivered.

Sometimes measurements won't do it (or be too complicated) so it's a case of trial & error. Some furniture companies offer a trial delivery before you commit to buy the item(s).
BTW - I once went to look at a top floor flat up some very narrow & windy stairs. In the flat was a huge American style fridge. How they got it up there I'll never know.

I had to read that twice, as I initially read "windy" as in the weather condition !!
I was thinking that that top floor flat must be really high up ......
I did consider winding but went with windy!
