Asking out of curiosity after reading something. If someone is having repairs done to a roof, are the workmen within their right to remove ivy on the walls? I'm assuming it may have hindered access...but wouldn't they need permission?

I don't think that ivy would be protected by anything like a TPO (Tree Protection Order). If the ivy belonged to another property, then there might be a legal recourse. If the ivy was on the neighbour's land, then a neighbour would be allowed to weed his garden, and removing ivy would be that sort of thing.

This would be a case of workmen you hired to make repairs and they removed the ivy on *your* house....without asking. Your ivy...your property.
Pasta, I've no legal knowledge about this. I presume you'd have no recourse in law. Maybe suing for something or other, but I doubt if you'd do that. It's prob just a life lesson for you to assume the worse and make sure you avoid it. I wouldn't have seen it coming, unless I'd been there observing and put my foot down.
Was the ivy growing over the roof
Was amazed when I saw it removed like this.

Yes of course they should ask first Pasta. Just a matter of simple courtesy.
Things like that should be explained to any customer beforehand.

Shock news Pasta............. there are a lot of knuckleheads in the building trade lacking in the social graces ;o(

As I said, this was just something I'd read. So as far as I know it was not on the roof. Oh, and the homeowner had every intention of keeping the ivy.
FatticusInch, wish I knew how to do it that way.

Lol, fatti...the photo in the article showed a hacking job...at least some was left for it to grow back. Oh, and it was Virginia Creeper...not the ivy more often seen here.

Builder...there are idiot knuckleheads everywhere
It'll soon grow back unless uprooted.
god I dont believe this
someone removes ivy to do a good job
and the owner , contractor, payer ( not the neighbour) whines

mainstream AB - ivy damages a wall so they were doing a favour...
It wasn't ivy - it was Virginia Creeper which does not damage walls.
I would be cross if mine was destroyed but it will grow back in time.
Well you could refuse and then they could refuse to repair your roof, if you value your ivy more than their safety. Get your foot tangled in it while on scaffold would not be a pleasant ending.

And are you certain they didnt ask?

Question Author
I've no idea, it was just a situation I read about elsewhere and I've not gone back to catch up. I did wonder if this would be common practice by those doing repairs.
