Does anybody know of this. I am waiting to be linked up for full fibre and landline phone at the moment - they are due any time.
Anyway friend told me that I could have bought a £5 sim that would have given me unlimited calls for the very old mobile phone that I have.

Asda Mobile (for example) offer a SIM that gives you unlimited calls (to regular UK numbers), unlimited texts (ditto) and 3 GB of data for £5 per month. There's no contract involved, so there's nothing to prevent you from just using the service for a single month if you wanted to:
