A Kind Of Serious Question

Why would anyone want to be prime minister at the moment, or even in the last couple of years? I really can’t fathom it, it’s a thankless task, even a poisoned chalice, the stress must be unbelievable and I can’t imagine the ‘power’ of the office makes up, in any way, for the downsides.
So what’s the appeal?

Probably too serious for ChatterBank! I don't suppose it matters whatever we write here because none is likely to change their mind on what they already believe.

Having considered the question for some time I approached the matter by looking at resignation speeches where I would expect to find an insight as to why individuals have stood for election to the post.

Apparently reasons have included: to serve the monarch and subjects, to seek parity for fellow countrymen, to support services within the country (from Armed Forces to the NHS), to stabilise the economy, reduce deficit and improve growth, to protect and defend the country, to secure more jobs for everyone, to champion the vulnerable etc., etc., etc.

I played this link to re-acquaint myself with what I consider to be a very good speech indeed (other links are available according to your preference):

Some previous incumbents have left office to immediately submerse themselves in the world of commerce and improve their personal wealth greatly.

Some of our Prime Ministers have taken the post at times when there was so much to do and so much to lose. Some had circumstances heaped upon them that could not help but impact hugely on their task - not least of which has been Covid.

I suspect John Bunyan may have written the song especially for our Prime Ministers - He who would valiant be 'gainst all disaster...
Present company excluded, @ 17.27. Won't be feeding you anyhow will leave you to play on your own.
I’m talking about the current disastrous incumbent that is Liz Truss, pimply. Read what I said again… or are you taking offence in her behalf?
