I have tried to watch a full-length movie which is on YouTube : 'Bicycle Thieves' a b/w 1948 Italian neorealist film directed by Vittorio De Sica, which billed as being 'In Italian with English subtitles'.

Can anyone explain why if I look at it on my PC or laptop the subtitles are there, but when I try to watch it on my Panasonic smart TV they are not (pressing 'sbtl' on the remote makes no difference).

You have to enable subtitles on you tube on the TV. It's already set on your PC. It's s different instance of YT on each media.

Subtitles on Youtube are different from those on broadcast channels.

Look on the Youtube controls for CC or a icon representing text.
TV subtitling (as controlled by the remote) is a different process from YouTube's internet subtitling? That's just a guess, I'm nowhere near being an expert.
If you have a smart tv, you should be able to watch YouTube on it.

TTT; I found it! I had to play the YouTube video (film), pause it and scroll along to cc which was in a small white square, I clicked on it to change it & it now works, thanks.
