Also, why do people on here keep talking about Christmas, some have been doing it for weeks, when it's not even December ??
I love Christmas, but it comes and goes quickly enough, every year ..

When we used to have family round for Christmas the starters used to be Spanish fizz in the living room and white wine in the kitchen (not quite so naughty to swig white as red) washed down with chocolates from the tree. The basic main was already too much work, so we would sit down about half past three (worn out and sweating from squabbling and food prep), and eventually be ready for pudding about six. I admire your efficiency and the skill you must have if you provide a properly organised table. Sorry I don't have any good ideas. Hope you all have a wonderful time and that your starter will be appreciated.
Is it the kids coming for Xmas dinner or someone else, Smow? As others have said, you need to think about your health and get Mr Smow to do it. If it's the kids, get them to do it. If it's other's, maybe you could go round to their's instead.
If you still want to do it, make it easier and just get prepared starters, turkey crown, veg and pudding with a carton of fresh custard, cream etc.

Don't even bother with the faff of a traditional meal...
1...buy it all done. M and S or Lidl...take your pick
2...a table laid with a selection of meats, cheeses, quiche etc...all of the sort you don't have every day. Send OH to Borough Market and have anything your heart desires.
3...Delegate...let everyone else cook, buy, lay up the table. You can drink prossecco.
