Hi - from someone who is very frustrated - In plain English please could someone please explain how to build my own web site - I'm not thick - I understand that you need a domain name and a host and that these things cost maybe a monthly or yearly fee - but I have just trawled around the web looking for a suitable site to start and all I got is gobbledgook!!
and all American gobbledgook at that !! even when I typed in specifically for the UK
I would like a simple site for a friend of mine who is a lone self employed graftef with no money she would benefit greatly by getting a web site for publicity and connectivity thank you in advance to all you tec heads out there I'm sure it's not as complicated as it seems.

HTML is the more versatile way of doing it and because of the way you can manipulate it yields better results. However, you would need a somewhat intimate knowledge of the language to code a whole Web Site/Web Page with it.
Therefore, the way your going to want to go about it is using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Editor. There are numerous free ones around, most of which double as a free Web Host, so it's two birds with one stone.
When asked to reccommend one, I always say www.webs.com
It's easy, and it's free.
Good luck to both of you, and I hope I've been of some assistance.

Why not create a blog with blogger?
http://www.blogger.com/start
Free, easy to do, no web design knowledge required.
You can create a blog about anything you like.
Here, for example, is a blog for a plumber
http://masterplumber.blogspot.com/
Here is a blog for a World War 1 soldier
http://wwar1.blogspot.com/

Forget about domain names and hosting to start with. Just design the site. For a simple site (with no more than 10 pages), this is free and easy to use:
http://www.freeserifs...com/software/webplus/
Once you've designed your site you can look for somewhere to host it. (You don't have to get your domain name through the same company but it can simplify things for a novice). 1and1 is one of the biggest UK providers, with easy-to-understand packages:
http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/Home
(Click on 'Web Hosting', on the left).
123-Reg is also popular:
