Pass The Dutchie is actually a cover. The band Musical Youth created it starting from two different songs, one of which is Pass The Kouchie by Mighty Diamonds. The Kouchie is the pot that holds marijuana in the Jamaican slang, while the Dutchie is just a generic cooking pot. Musical Youth decided to switch the workd just to make the song more politically correct.

Not really political correctness Baz, but radio friendliness. "Kouchie" would've seen the song banned on the Beeb, and Radio One airplay was essential to the success of a single in 1982, especially for a new band.

It is a veiled reference to smoking ganja. In Jamaica you sit in a circle and the pipe/pot is passed around on the left.

No Baz I am not and never have been interested in drugs (apart from gin and sometimes rum) but I used to know quite a lot of people who did. Very unfortunately one of my school friends dies of an overdose when she was 18. I never understood how she could do that she was attractive and very intelligent. Just with the wrong set at sometime.
