People like Clarkson used to regard their demise as outrageous, because modern ones are slow to light up to full brightness. They could be used by you (not recommended, for economy reasons), could be sold by you (if you could find any oddbods who's think it worthwhile) or could be recycled (many big shops who actually sell bulbs will accept them).
If you REALLY think how much light you actually need it turns out I need very little (and blind people need none at all!). Kitchen & bathroom - only when I'm in there at night. Lounge - the TV provides light. Study - laptop & a small desk light. Bedroom - a bedside LED tube for a few minutes when turning in.
