I've read that DC, quite difficult to read but somehow uplifting.

I also recommend 'The Hare with Amber Eyes' and 'The White Road' both by Edmund De Waal. Most interesting and enjoyable.

A Thousand Splendid Suns resides on my Kindle, but I just can't seem to get into it. I've tried several times. Time to have another go perhaps.

I have to admit the feminist in me was not happy when reading but I also realise that that sort of situation is common in many countries most unfortunately.

a true story of a couple from Fowey facing eviction/bankruptcy and then a dgenerative illness of her husband, Moth, set out to walk the 630 miles of the SW coastal path - the second book is Cape Wrath and apparently there's a third one - some one who read the Salt Path realised that they would be ideal for helping shape a derelict cider farm that he had/has.

That's true naomi, I found The Kite Runner amazing in exposure of a different culture.

Another good one is "Hope in a Ballet Shoe", by Michaela & Elaine DePrince. It's wonderful how some people cope with extreme adversity in their lives.

I know. I’m only sorry that denial in the west is so rife. For those who have no experience of it it’s impossible to believe or even to contemplate I suppose.

I've done it. After several earlier attempts to get through A Thousand Splendid Suns this time I cracked it. And now I can't understand why I struggled with it before.

I found it such a marvellous read this time, I'm now half-way through a second reading. Very well written and captivating even if painfully eye-opening at times.

So thank you to all who have over the years recommended it, including naomi and lady-janine - you gave me the impetus to try once more, and it paid off handsomely.
