Dishwasher Problems

My son moved into a property with a new dishwasher fitted. He started a wash without opening the water inlet tap first. When we pointed out the problem he tried another wash after opening it. This wash finished but left a pool of dirty water at the bottom and dirty dishes. Please advise me what could be the issue. Thankyou

May have damaged the pump running it dry

I think it will just need resetting.
