Announcement on Radio 4 that Princess Diana had died. I heard it on the morning news at 7 am in the Netherlands, an hour ahead of the Uk - and phoned my mother, whose tart comment was, 'so what, she probably was having car-sex with some well-hung army stud.'

What a horrid thing to say. Many people wholly unconnected with the town of Dunblane would have been horrified and affected by the senseless murder of so many small children.
