why do cats clean themselves when you are eating?

Because they're pretending they're not watching you! Cats like to think they're more sophisticated then dogs, and would never sit begging and drooling for your food scraps, but in reality they're dying for you to put done your left overs, so they keep an eye on you just in case :) This is just from personal experience of my own greedy moggies of course, someone else may have an actual scientific reason why.. :)
