My co-worker asked if I've started my Christmas shopping (she knows it's just me and mum) and then said, "Oh yes, I suppose you have not many to buy for". Not nice?

I would disagree with the majority and say that your colleague sounded rather dismissive - possibly even patronising but the written word hides the way in which something is said.
