To provide an answer to it though, both sides used poison gas in WW1:

It was Germany who were the first to use poison gas in 1915. Then both France and Great Britain followed suit. In terms of total production Germany made the most, followed by the French with our contry producing the least. When I was self-employed, there was an elderly man who lived opposite. His father was exposed to a gas attack in WW1. He apparently spent the rest of his life sleeping in a specially made bed as he was unable to breathe lying down.

I have to say I thought the use at Loos by the Allies -
( wind blew the wrong way back onto the French who then fired on their own men who were retreating)

Haber designed the German gasses and Frau Haber was the one who committed suicide

Probably the last time the UK forces used gas (not lethal, of course, for most people) was in the early 70s in West Belfast.
the French were the first, according to Wiki.
I think The Germans started it
